Historical interlude: binomial coefficients
Although the ranking of binomial coefficients in a triangle is named after Blaise Pascal (1623 - 1662), these triangular numbers had been known hundreds of years before. Below is one of the first representations of this triangle from Yang Hui (1261-1275).
Blaise Pascal denoted the ranking not in the triangle shape above, but in the arrangement below.
