Numbers: Integers
Sum, terms, product and factors
Addition and subtraction
Addition and subtraction are considered prerequisite knowledge for this chapter.
\[\begin{array}{ll}
2+3=5 \qqqquad&5-3=2\\
25+8 = 33 &33-8=25
\end{array}\]
An addition is also called a sum.
The sum of #2# and #3# is #2+3=5#.
The numbers #2# and #3# are called the terms of the sum.
Multiplication and division
We also consider multiplication and division as prerequisite knowledge in this chapter:
\[\begin{array}{ll}
2 \times 2 =4 \qqqquad&4 \div 2=2\\
3 \times 8 =24 &24 \div 3=8
\end{array}\]
A multiplication is also called a product.
The product of #3# and #8# is #3\times 8=24.#
The numbers #3# and #8# are called the factors of the product.
The product #3\times 8# means #8+8+8#.
The terms of #15+23# are:
\[15 \text{ and } 23\]
